VicPolice GLLO Show – Wednesday 7th September 2001 on JOY 94.9

Senior Constable Gerard De Leon joined Victoria Police in 2005 and is one of Victoria Police’s newest Gay and Lesbian Liaison Officers (GLLO) having completed the GLLO course in July 2011. Gerard is attached to the Operations Response Unit (ORU). The ORU provides highly visible and highly trained police to assist local police in responding to identified policing issues. What does all this mean, and why is there a GLLO in the ORU, well you should have listened to the show, but if you didn’t you can always download the podcast.

White Balloon Day is in response to child sexual abuse. Acting Sergeant Electra Wellens, talks about why White Balloon Day has come into the annual calendar.

On the show this week, Paul Anthony, Senior Constable Gabby Tyacke and Acting Sergeant Electra Wellens were joined by Detective Sergeant Jill Dyson from the Centre for Investigation training. Jill is part of a team who train members of Victoria Police to become detectives.

A number of people had contacted us via gllo@joy.org.au asking that we examine the issue of cyber crimes. What constitutes a cyber crime and what evidence do the police need to investigate them. So responding to your requests here is the show.

Senior Constable Beck Lawther of the Melbourne Highway Patrol was our special guest on this Australia Day show.

Paul, Gabby and Beck talked about the dangers of driving on flood affected roads, how to navigate roundabout (legally). Yes everyone thinks they know how to do it, but is that the case?

Beck spoke about the honour of being the squad leader of the Victoria Police Pride March contingent and how that job allows her to yell at the Chief Commissioner.

The crew are now well and truly settled in to life without Paul Anthony in this the second week of GLLO Lite. This week was also the first in our new timeslot in the new JOY 94.9 grid. Listen to us each and every Wednesday midday to 1pm, or police parlance, 1200 to 1300.

This week Greg Adkins (Anti-Violence Project) and Sgt Scott Davis discuss all things summer safety. Loads of tips on travelling safely to and from the major GLBTI events over the summer period via public transport or just walking.

Crime Stoppers, Anti Violence Project Round Up and an interview with Jack a victim of crime, what a week.

Crime Stoppers Victoria once again provided us with 4 crimes which they are asking you to help solve including an armed robbery and the theft of a soil tester worth $30 000. Get over to Crime Stoppers Victoria where you can view photos of people who police would like to speak to regarding these and other crimes. Who knows you may just have the piece of the puzzle required to solve a crime.

Greg Adkins from the Anti-Violence Project was also in the studios with Sgt Scott Davis and Paul Anthony. The AVP along with a few other organisations from the gay community in Victoria have been on a road show to places like Morwell, Bendigo and Shepparton to promote the changes to 85 pieces of Federal Legislation which have been changed to create equality for GLBT people.

We finished the show off with an interview. Jack is a gay man who had his wallet stolen after inviting a man he met on a phone chat line over to his house. Greg, Scott and Paul discussed the incident and provided some excellent safety tips for those who like to socialise this way. The podcast will be available soon. Another week, another exciting VicPolice GLLO Show on JOY 94.9.

From VicPoliceNews.com.au we spoke about the success of the weapons amnesty held by police during April. Over 800 weapons such as machetes, swords and hunting knives were handed in. Visit the VicPoliceNews website.

Speaking of success Crime Stoppers Victoria advised us that during the month of May Crime Stoppers callers have assisted in 50 arrests for 150 charges. Callers also helped in the seizure of $500 000 worth of drugs and the recovery of $50 000 worth of property. Get across to Crime Stoppers Victoria to see if you can help solve a crime.

The crimes highlighted this week by Crime Stoppers Victoria were a serious assault in Frankston North on 20 February 2010, an armed robbery in McKinnon on 14 February, 2010 and an assault with intent to rape in Warragul on 31 January 2010. We finished the show by interviewing a new volunteer at from the Anti-Violence Project. Scott Harrison heard the calling to join the AVP in March this year when he attended a screening of the documentary ‘Holding Hands’ at this years Melbourne Queer Film Festival. The documentary highlighted to Scott the ongoing impact a homophobic assault can have not only on the victim but across the whole GLBTI community. As such he decided he need to be part of an organisation trying to reduce the incidence of homophobic crimes. You can download or listen to the interview here.
